We left off with the 2008 NBA Finals about to tip off. Now that the smoke has cleared, and everyone (led by Shaq) have taken their shots at Kobe Bryant, it’s my turn! Rightfully so, comparisons between Bryant and Michael Jordan were swirling throughout the playoffs. However, some glaring differences became obvious on the NBA’s main stage. First, say what you want about Kobe’s supporting cast, they have as much, if not more, talent than any of Jordan’s squads that won 6 titles. Jordan helped turn Scottie Pippen into one of the 50 best players in the history of the NBA. Kobe can’t say the same about Lamar Odom, who has all the physical tools of Pippen. Kobe and Odom seemed to disappear during crucial stretches in the Finals, stretches when you knew Jordan or Pippen would have taken over. Remember when Jordan had the flu and could barely walk onto the court during the Finals (against the Jazz, I believe)? He still controlled the game. I get the feeling if either Kobe or Lamar had so much as a hang nail, they would need a night off, even during the Finals.
Congrats to the Celtics, who relied on good old fashioned defense to bring home their first title in 24 years. It’s hard not to like Kevin Garnett as a player and for his respect of the game. While his post game interviewing skills could use some work, he certainly deserves the be called a champion. His intensity reminds me of the NFL’s Ray Lewis. Neither of these two are their teams most talented player, but make no mistake, they are their teams leader.
